This crisis in arts funding is a reminder of what an important role is played by FAN support for the arts in Miami-Dade. No better time to renew your support for FAN and to help recruit new members.
While FAN cannot engage in political advocacy as an organization, individual advocacy for government support for the arts is impactful.
According to the Arts Action Alliance, a volunteer arts advocacy organization, the proposed Miami-Dade County budget for FY 2025-2026 released by Mayor Daniella Levine Cava on July 15 includes major cuts to the arts, including:
– $12.8 million cut to cultural grants funding—a more than 50% reduction
– A merger of the Department of Cultural Affairs into the Miami-Dade Public Library System
– The elimination of the position of Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs.
This proposed budget is NOT FINAL until it is approved by the Board of County Commissioners at the second and final budget hearing on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
If you believe that these cuts would be devastating to the arts in Miami-Dade,
Tell the Mayor and your County Commissioner to:
– Restore arts grants funding
– Keep the Department of Cultural Affairs independent and preserve the Director position
